ABSTRACT

Objective:To assess the ability of SPIO on MRI imaging for the nude mice model grafted with human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

Methods:Firstly we made Fe3O4 nanoparticles in chemistry coprecipitation, and then coated them with human serum albumin to produce a new-type negative contrast medium called SPIO for magnetic resonance imaging on liver. 18 nude mice models grafted with human HCC, underwent T1 and T2 weighted MR imaging before and after the injection of Gd-DTPA and SPIO agent in order to compare the number of lesions detected by MR with pathology examination.

Results:98.2% small liver lesions were detected on SPIO enhanced MR imaging, which was almost the same as that of the pathology examination. When the diameters of liver tumors were inferior 3mm, SPIO enhanced MR imaging on which 92.3% tumors was detected was superior to Gd-DTPA enhanced MR imaging on which 23.1% tumors was detected.

Conclusion:SPIO detecting ability superior to Gd-DTPA and approached that of gross pathology on T2 weighted enhanced MR imaging.
